MOAS' 2019 Bissell Pet foundation spay/neuter grant

With the Help of the Bissell Pet Foundation, We’ll Spay & Neuter 800 Pets in 2019!

11/17/19 UPDATE: We are almost finished with all of our Bissell spay/neuters. We are totally OUT of cat spay/neuter appointments, but we do have a few remaining appointments for dogs (both spays and neuters). If you haven’t applied for our Bissell Grant yet, please do so ASAP!

We are proud to announce that our shelter was chosen out of hundreds of applications from across the nation to receive a $23,000 spay/neuter grant from the Bissell Pet Foundation. This generous grant will enable us to offer 800 free spays and neuters for the residents of Madison and Oglethorpe counties next year to individuals who might not otherwise be able to afford to alter their animals. In the past year alone we took in over 2,800 animals. Pet overpopulation has been a consistent problem in our community, but this year has been especially difficult. Even in December when “puppy and kitten season” has normally ended, we are still seeing shocking numbers arrive at the shelter.

Our shelter is only designed to hold 80-100 animals but in this past year, an average of 225 animals entered our shelter each month, which is more than double the shelter's capacity. In our busiest months, we’ve sometimes received over 400, all of which makes it extremely difficult to find homes for all of the animals in our care. But this grant will enable us to real steps to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community. This grant will also benefit the animals altered and their owners. Studies show that altered animals tend to live longer, healthier lives. Altering animals when they are young reduces the risk of certain forms of cancer in both males and females. It can also reduce the urge to roam so they are less likely to suffer injury from being struck by automobiles, fighting with other animals (including wildlife), or even being harmed by humans. It will also save owners the substantial costs of caring for a litter and can even ward off undesirable behavior like aggression and marking.

MOAS has already begun reviewing applications and scheduling surgeries. Preference will be given to low-income citizens first. The grant is only open to residents of Madison and Oglethorpe counties. Please fill out the application below or stop by the shelter for an application. For additional information you may call 706-795-2868 Wednesday- Sunday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Every spay/neuter makes a huge impact!

If we assume that all 800 of these to-be-altered animals have the potential to birth or sire two litters a year with an average of five puppies or kittens in each litter, this grant will allow us to prevent the birth of 8,000 unwanted animals per year! But that’s just one year. Every kitten or puppy born that is unaltered has the chance to produce more and more offspring, who then may also reproduce themselves, leading to thousands of unwanted animals in just a few years. Check out the cat and dog pyramids below made by our friends at Spay Baton Rouge to get a better idea of the size of the problem. But with your help, we can break this cycle!
